About the badge Design and Meaning

I wanted something bold, direct, and recognizable that I could use on my work, my site, my company and not the cover of our games.

I intentionally stayed away from the more traditional circle/seal design, other people like DenVerse and Polygon Treehouse have great options there. The rectangle is bold, you could see a reference to a monolith, or political movements that use the black flag to advocate for humanity and social benefit. I chose a tall rectangle, like a banner, or a monolith standing immovably in the path of the Generative AI threat. Something with sharp 90 degree angles, it is confrontational, it is structural, it is a response to the threats represented by corporations pushing Generative AI.

The black felt obvious, it was the only part that didn’t need though to decide on. This badge is bold, it is black and white like Generative AI is a black and white issue. There is no room to negotiate, this is a poisoned well and we will not drink from it or pas on the poison to others.

I debated (and still debate) the colour of the text Guarantee. Though a colour like red would have been bolder, more human, and more visceral in some ways, I decided on green after consulting some friends. I feel that green reflected the environment, the ultimate final accumulation of the AI consequence. It also has stood in for primitivist political movements in the past, the antithesis of Generative AI. And finally green is also associated with finance, and Generative AI hurts all workers financial interests while exclusively serving the financial interests of investors. That’s a lot to put on a colour, and there is probably more you can imagine, but those all felt relevant in the decision between ‘blood red’ and ‘ecological green’. Green feels like the energy that this edge needed to finish of it’s direct and bold design.

I wanted text that fit the theme, technical and clean font like the idea of modern tech branding, and a signature like line to polish it off, seal the guarantee at the end. The guarantee not only covers some text, it also cuts of the rectangle, nothing goes past the guarantee, and no Generative AI will be used when you see this badge.
