We needed a system that could show foliage dying – in real time – on multiplayer.

I had already developing a custom wind displacement shader that I could extended adding a black and Wight input for leaf age. When we needed an area to die in game, a vecotr 3 would be set to the center of the location. This triggered the show falloff of the alpha clip value to slide to the appropriate age for the leaf in it’s death cycle.

By limiting the interface with the CPU to a set of vector 3s I was able to maintain the performance targets we had. while creating a really haunting anf dynamic effect.
