One of my first jobs at Alientrap Games was adding animation to the ship airlock in Gunhead.
The geometry was static, and for optimization it had been split amongst 3 different meshes that made up the static environment.
To make the door work in the scene a lot of things needed to be made/adjusted and animated:
- Separated door geo form static meshes.
- Retexture to optimize.
- Add extending tube mesh to connect the door to the Gunhead mech behind the door.
- Rig the door and lock mechanism.
- Animate door opening sequence.
- Reuse and reveres opening animation for the closing animation.
- Create hole in ship mesh’s to fit the door and it’s new docking tube mesh into the scene.
- Setup animation in Unity engine.
All in all a straightforward but multifaceted task the brought in many disciplines of game art – and created a smoother experience for the player every time they suit up for a mission.
