Modbox: Facial Animation System

Modbox uses a variety of avatars, from in house character I created, exiting characters from before, and new avatars form 3rd parties like Synty.

We needed a facial animation system that could work on any avatar model, and tied into the OVR lip-sync system.

My setup uses a mesh decal, shaped to match each style of avatar, and UV’d to project properly.

The workflow steps where:

  • Import character mesh
  • Remove existing facial features
  • Add the face layer
  • Import to unity
  • Connect to OVR
  • Select face style
  • Go talk to friends in VR!

Using this workflow I was able to overhaul every single character in Modbox. Now we have fully expressive avatars and fully expressive NPC on demand for our players to use.
