After being asked to create the pre-rendered cinematics, I proposed a workflow to Stitch Media. Focusing on good pre-production communication to keep production cost down, this was the workflow I designed:
- Stitch Media has pre-existing script and ideas for scenes (Program)
- Meeting with the producer and a member of the in-house art team to review the scripts, define what they envisioned.
- I create storyboards with framing, shot information and notes for animation, sound design, and other context.
- They review the storyboards internally, and in meetings with me. We polish it to match what they want.
- Production begins with block-in’s in Unity, as storyboards and animatics are approved I add the necessary art.
- The in house artist, Maddi McDougall, advises me on existing assets we can reuse, and creates new animation assets where required.
- Once animatics are locked in we do lighting and coulour polish passes.
- Submit 4k video.
Cinemanchine and Timeline where essential to perfecting these shots in Unity. Using the Post Processing Stack we could shoot the entire cinematics package in unity, essentially front loading all post production in the workflow.
By using VCams and timelines we had predicable render results where we could fine tune every scene until it was perfect.
Everything form cameras blocking to triggering VFX was choreographed through the timeline.
