In Canada, 24% of human trafficking reports involve minors. Human traffickers don’t fit stereotypes and are hard to spot. So, working closely with survivors, Victim Services of Durham Region co-created a VR experience that puts young people in the shoes of diverse characters from their peer group navigating the subtleties of human trafficking, set in authentic IRL and online youth culture contexts. Building empathy for human trafficking targets as they navigate dangerous situations that seem innocuous at first, the experience shows no one is fated to a single ending. VO: Human traffickers are effective because they play to young people’s need for autonomy. So IN YOUR SHOES gives youth the autonomy to navigate subtle yet complex situations in a safe virtual environment – then share their insights in an IRL group setting
